Langbein, Hermann

Born in Vienna in 1912, escaped from Austria in 1938, member of the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War, in 1941–42 a prisoner in the Dachau concentration camp, 1942–44 in the Auschwitz concentration camp, after 1945 a Communist Party functionary in Vienna, as of 1954 a leader in several associations of concentration camp survivors, expelled from the Communist Party of Austria in 1958, played a decisive role in bringing about the first Frankfurt Auschwitz Trial, involved for decades in bringing Nazi criminals to justice and obtaining compensation for survivors, gained prominence as author, died in Vienna in 1995.
